How to Make a GIF with AI (ChatGPT and Online)
How to make a GIF with AI three ways: ChatGPT Images 2.6, an online AI GIF generator, or a video clip. Plus a prompt formula and 10 prompts that loop.
You can now make a GIF with AI from one sentence. Since OpenAI released ChatGPT Images 2.6 on November 4, 2026, its GPT-Image-2.6 models can draw an animated GIF straight from a text prompt: you describe a subject and one motion, and the model draws every frame and returns a looping GIF. No camera, no video clip and no editing app.
This guide shows how to make a GIF with AI in three ways, a prompt formula that gives smooth loops, ten prompts you can copy, and fixes for the usual problems. To skip straight to making one, use the AI GIF generator on our homepage.
How to make a GIF with AI: three ways
- ChatGPT Images 2.6: starts from a chat message. Best for trying it out inside a chat you already use. You need a ChatGPT account.
- An AI GIF generator: starts from a text prompt. Best when you want control over frames, speed, shape and loops. You need a browser.
- Video to GIF: starts from a video clip. Best for footage you already have. You need the clip and a converter.
1. Make a GIF in ChatGPT
ChatGPT Images 2.6 adds animated GIFs to image generation in ChatGPT.
- Open a new chat in ChatGPT.
- Ask for a GIF in plain words, for example: "Make an animated GIF of a paper boat rocking on small waves, cartoon style, seamless loop."
- Wait for the GIF, then ask for changes in the same chat ("slower", "make the boat red").
- Download the file from the image menu.
ChatGPT is the easy way to try the feature, but you set the frame count, speed and shape through the conversation, not with controls, and how many images you can make depends on your ChatGPT plan. That is fine for one GIF; it gets slow when you want ten variations of a reaction GIF.
2. Use an online AI GIF generator
An AI GIF generator calls the same kind of model with fixed settings, so each GIF comes out the way you asked. On ImagenGIF it works like this:
- Type what should happen in one or two sentences.
- Pick a style (cartoon, 3D, pixel art, anime, claymation, neon or realistic).
- Choose 8, 12 or 16 frames, a speed (200, 120 or 70 ms per frame) and a shape (square, portrait or landscape).
- Press generate. A Standard GIF takes about 20 seconds, an HD GIF about a minute.
- Download the GIF. It loops by default.
ImagenGIF runs on GPT-Image-2.6 Flare for Standard and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst for HD, with 720 px square frames. For words, use the text to GIF maker, which keeps the lettering readable in every frame. For reactions with a caption, use the AI GIF meme generator. The GPT Image 2.6 page explains the two models and lets you make still pictures too.
3. Turn a video into a GIF
If the moment you want already exists as a video, a converter is still the right tool. Trim the clip to two to four seconds, upload it to a video-to-GIF converter, set the frame rate (10 to 15 frames per second is plenty) and export. You can also make a short clip with an AI video tool first and convert that, though it takes longer and AI video exported as a GIF often looks soft.
This method is not text-to-GIF: it needs footage. ImagenGIF does not convert photos or videos; it draws new GIFs from text.
How to make a GIF with AI that loops
The loop comes from the prompt. A good GIF prompt describes one short action, not a story. Use this formula:
Subject + one motion + framing + style + loop
- Subject: who or what is in the GIF. Be specific: "a chubby orange cat in a tiny party hat", not "a cat".
- One motion: the single thing that moves. Repeating motions loop best: bouncing, nodding, waving, spinning, blinking, flickering, waves rolling.
- Framing: "close-up", "side view", "centered on a plain background". A still camera gives steadier frames.
- Style: the look, such as cartoon, pixel art, claymation or neon. Pick one.
- Loop: end with "seamless loop" so the last frame flows back into the first.
Example: "A chubby orange cat in a tiny party hat nods along to music, close-up, centered on a pink background, bold cartoon style, seamless loop."
10 AI GIF prompts you can copy
- Surfing corgi: "A corgi in sunglasses rides a small wave on a surfboard, side view, bright cartoon style, seamless loop."
- Sleepy cat: "A fluffy cat slowly falls asleep on a stack of books, eyes closing and opening, soft anime style, seamless loop."
- Coffee steam: "Steam curls up from a cup of coffee on a wooden table, close-up, cozy warm light, realistic, seamless loop."
- Pixel campfire: "A campfire crackles under a starry sky, sparks rising, 16-bit pixel art, seamless loop."
- Clay snail: "A clay snail slides across a leaf, leaving a shiny trail, stop-motion claymation look, seamless loop."
- Neon sign: "A neon sign that reads 'OPEN' flickers on letter by letter on a dark brick wall, seamless loop."
- Rocket launch: "A tiny cartoon rocket wobbles, then blasts off in a puff of smoke, centered, flat colors, seamless loop."
- Rainy window: "Raindrops run down a window with city lights blurred behind it, night, calm mood, seamless loop."
- Dancing cactus: "A cactus in a pot wiggles side to side like it is dancing, 3D toy render, pastel background, seamless loop."
- Reaction dog: "A dog's jaw drops in shock, ears flying up, close-up, cartoon style, bold caption at the bottom: 'WAIT WHAT', seamless loop."
Paste any of these into the AI GIF generator, or put the caption idea into the GIF meme generator.
Fixes for common AI GIF problems
- The subject changes between frames. Describe it in more detail (color, clothes, shape) and keep one subject. HD keeps frames steadier than Standard.
- The loop jumps at the end. Choose a repeating motion and add "seamless loop". A one-way motion, like a ball flying off screen, will always jump.
- The text is misspelled. Keep words short, put them in quotes, and use the text to GIF maker, which asks the model to spell the words exactly in every frame.
- The motion is too fast or too slow. Change the speed setting instead of the prompt. 120 ms per frame looks natural; 200 ms gives a calm, hand-drawn feel.
- The motion is too small. Use a strong verb and say how big it is: "jumps high", "spins all the way around".
- The file is too big for a chat app. Use 8 or 12 frames and Standard quality.
- The prompt is refused. GIFs of real people, public figures, minors, sexual content and copyrighted characters or logos are not allowed. Describe an original character instead. A refused prompt costs nothing.
How much it costs
In ChatGPT, GIFs come with your ChatGPT plan and its limits. On ImagenGIF you pay with one-time credit packs: a Standard GIF is 3 credits and an HD GIF is 6, so a Standard GIF costs $0.37 in the smallest pack and $0.21 in the largest. Credits never expire and failed GIFs are refunded automatically. See pricing for the packs.
FAQ
Can ChatGPT make GIFs? Yes. Since ChatGPT Images 2.6, ChatGPT can make animated GIFs from a prompt. How many you can make depends on your plan.
What is the best AI model for GIFs? GPT-Image-2.6 is the first OpenAI image model that outputs GIFs directly. Its Flare model is fast and cheap; Sunburst is slower with more detail.
Can AI turn my photo into a GIF? Not with ImagenGIF. The OpenAI API makes GIFs from text only, so we do not offer photo to GIF. For a clip you already have, use a video-to-GIF converter.
How long can an AI GIF be? Up to 16 frames on ImagenGIF. At 200 ms per frame that is a 3.2 second loop; at 70 ms it is about one second.
Is ImagenGIF made by OpenAI? No. ImagenGIF is an independent site that uses OpenAI's GPT-Image-2.6 through the API. It is not affiliated with OpenAI or Google.
